Program Synopsis: The Dakar, Senegal Summer Program is a five-week opportunity for students to get to know the culture, society, politics and language of West Africa by living and studying in the most vibrant, cosmopolitan and stable city in the region. The program is especially well suited for students with no or limited experience in Africa, providing a secure, well-guided first step introduction to this often misunderstood region. At the same time, the program also provides a base for more advanced students who are looking for a way to begin a longer period of study or research on francophone Africa, the Sahel region, or Islamic Africa (all this in one remarkably representative country). The program is a partnership among Indiana University Center for African Studies, the University of Oregon International Studies Program, and Senegal’s main university, the Université Cheikh Anta Diop.
Attractions/niche: The program's four pillars include: 1) a seminar style course that features guest lectures from leading Senegalese scholars and public figures; 2) a service learning placement in a Senegalese non-governmental organization, tailored to student interests and strengths; 3) a series of field excursions to various destinations around Senegal; 4) Senegalese university students who serve as conversation partners and cultural guides for program participants (one Senegalese student for every two program participants).

Students looking for a lot of independence but intimate support when they need it in the form of the RD. Students on a tight budget. Program Synopsis: Two rather different tracks, both with homestay housing and no language prerequisite: INTENSIVE LANGUAGE TRACK: Available semester or short-term. Semester students take three 4-week language courses (first through sixth semester levels) and have the option of a rural homestay for part of the time without need to interrupt language studies. Short-term students enroll in one or more of five 3-week options, one offered during winter break and the other four back to back from mid-May through early August. Students receive 23 hours per week of in-class language instruction (maximum 5 students per class) and complete a 5-credit first- or second-year language course each three weeks. SERVICE LEARNING TRACK: Semester only. Students take Community Engagement in Mexico--a service-learning course that connects classroom discussion, readings, and assignments to service with local education and health organizations--plus two first-, second-, or third-year language courses.
Attractions/niche: Both tracks are unusually affordable. The intensive language track is ideal for students who want to advance as rapidly as possible in Spanish. A student participating in all four May/summer terms, for example, could do two full years of language (20 semester credits) during a single summer! The service-learning track affords an unusual opportunity to combine intensive Spanish (10 credits total) with a powerful community immersion experience. Students advanced enough to take courses taught in Spanish should instead look at Minnesota’s Ecuador, Venezuela, or Spain program.
